Remembering the Blaze That Changed Oceanside

On April 25, 2024, the Oceanside community was rocked by a massive fire that engulfed the far end of the beloved Oceanside Pier. One year later, residents and visitors alike pause to reflect on that day — and the strength the community showed in its aftermath.

Fire Destroys Ruby’s Diner and More

The fire began near the end of the pier, destroying the iconic Ruby’s Diner — a retro eatery known for its French fries and milkshakes served above the Pacific waves. Nearby food stands, including the Brine Box, were also impacted.

As smoke billowed into the sky, the scene drew shock and heartbreak from locals who had long seen the pier as a symbol of resilience, having withstood decades of storms and salt air.

Heroic Response Saved the Majority of the Pier

Fire crews from land and sea — including San Diego lifeguards aboard the Triton fire boat — fought hard for days to contain the flames. Their heroic actions saved about 90% of the historic structure, preventing the fire from spreading further inland.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported.

What Caused the Fire?

According to fire investigators, the blaze likely started due to an accidental electrical failure beneath the pier’s planks, near the northwest corner outside the closed restaurant.

Looking Ahead: Rebuilding with Purpose

Since the fire, Oceanside officials have been actively developing a $17 million reconstruction plan. Engineers continue to assess the pier’s remaining structure, and the city aims to preserve the landmark’s original character while restoring its integrity.

Construction is expected to focus on the wooden western end of the pier, with hopes of reopening it to the public in the coming years.

A Community United

As the city looks to the future, the anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, unity, and community pride that define Oceanside. From first responders to neighbors and city leaders, the response to the fire highlighted what makes this coastal city so special.
